In celebration of Alien Day, director Fede Álvarez treated fans to their first look at hisAliensequel.Álvarez’sAlienmovie is currently untitled and will be the ninthmovie in theAlienfranchise. Álvarez co-wrote the movie with Rodo Sayagues; previously, the two worked on the 2013 remake ofEvil Dead,Don’t Breathe,Don’t Breathe 2, and the 2022 remake ofTexas Chainsaw Massacre. The untitledAlienmovie will star Cailee Spaeny, Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu and will be released on Hulu rather than in theaters. The movie is in the early stages of production, with principal photography beginning in Budapest on Jul 27, 2025.RELATED:Aliens: Dark Descent Reveals Release Date and New Tactical GameplayWhile the movie is still in its early stages, it seems like Álvarez is already hard at work. On April 26, Álvarez posted a photo from the set ofthe untitledAlienmovieon Twitter with the caption, “Happy #AlienDay everybody!” The photo features a clapperboard that said “Happy Alien Day” and was in the grasp of a facehugger. Eagle-eyed fans should spot the date - written out as 04.26.23 - Álvarez’s name and that of the movie’s cinematographer, Galo Olivares. The facehugger and clapperboard appear on a dressed set; the background is seemingly a spaceship, specifically a corridor.
Sci-fi movie-themed holidays are nothing new. The town of Riverside, Iowa, celebrates Captain Kirk’s future birthday every year on March 22, Star Trek Day is celebrated on September 8 to commemorate the day the show’s first episode aired, and May 4 marks Star Wars Day. Alien Day is one of the newest sci-fi holidays, with this year being the seventh year it’s been celebrated. The holiday was decided on in 2016 and refers to the designation given to the moon on which xenomorphs were discovered inthe firstAlienmovie. In the movie, the moon is referred to as LV-426, so the date April 26 was chosen as it is written out as 4/26 in the United States. While some celebrate with movie marathons or trivia nights, others, like Álvarez, celebrate with a photo.
Although the image doesn’t give away many details, it is the first behind-the-scenes look fans have gotten so far. The picture does show off part of the set, which is reminiscent of the Nostromo from the first movie. Although the movie is supposedly separate from the installments before it, it will seemingly pay homage to its predecessors in small ways. The photo also features a facehugger, which could well mean that fans will see plenty of the creepy creatures in the upcoming movie. Wherever Álvarez plans to take the movie, it’s likely the story is in good hands. Between his experience making horror movies and his experience making reboots, it seems Álvarez has had a fair amount of practice ahead of tackling thenewest installment in theAlienfranchise.
