The recent announcement ofTrigun: Stampedehas certainlybeen big news in the anime world, and the new series is set to be one of the biggest events of the year. Returning to the world of the classic manga with a strikingly new art style and the full involvement of original creator Yasuhiro Nightow, new details on the project have been shown at Anime Expo which reveal thatTrigun: Stampedewill be taking the franchise in an exciting new direction.
At the “Trigun: Stampede: Lock & Load!” panel, hosted on Saturday night of Anime Expo, Yasuhiro Nightow was met with fanfare in accompaniment with other concept artist, Kouji Tajima and anime producers Kiyotaka Waki and Yoshihiro Watanabe or Studio Orange, as well as Katsuhiro Takei of Toho Animation. As the studio behind acclaimed CGI-anime includingBEASTARSandLand of the Lustrous, Orange is specially equipped to render the setting ofTrigunin a new way.

The producers at the panel mentioned that rendering theaesthetic of the original 2D animation into the technology of CGIis of their utmost importance, and that the style of both the originalTrigunmanga and anime as well as classic 2D Disney animation were huge inspirations for adapting the world into this new medium. Likewise, the producers stress that this technology is intended to facilitate a sort of return to classic 80s and 90s action anime, capturing the grit and essence of classics likeCowboy BebopandGhost in the Shell, not to mention the originalTrigunitself. As for Nightow, he mentioned that the biggest essence of this new series is bringing a cinematic feel, citing Hollywood cinema and a post-pandemic quest for “pure entertainment” as the inspirations for an octane-fueled new adventure.
After showing off some promotional art, the real climax of the panel began: anofficial trailer for the new series. First streamed to the massive applause of the convention room, the new trailer has since been made publicly available by Crunchyroll:
From this trailer, it’s apparent that the new series will involve new information on the origins of Vash the Stampede. While many of the specifics of the plot are being kept under wraps for now, the dynamics between Vash, Knives, and Rem are a major driving force. Far frombeing a remake or reboot of the original series,Trigun: Stampedeis said by the creators to take things in an entirely new direction and show an entirely new side of the world ofTrigun. Further details are set to be revealed soon, and the creators have even approved press interviews for more information at Anime Expo.
The crowd at Anime Expo was ecstatic. The “Lock & Load!” panel ended with a triumphant, impromptu chanting of the famous mantra: “Love and Peace!” What other end could be more fitting?
