10Suletta Mercury
Suletta Mercury is the main protagonist ofMobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury, the latest in theMobile Suit Gundamseriesand the first Gundam anime in seven years. Suletta is a rather timid girl who has problems communicating with others, and the pilot of the Gundam Aerial.
Suletta is the first female protagonist of the Gundam franchise, and she has a lot to live up to! Luckily, she is doing just that. Viewers love watching her pilot the Gundam Aerial, and are already hard at work creating fan theories about her true identity.
9Amiya
Amiya is more than meets the eye. This unassuming young girl is actually the leader of Rhodes Island, the protagonistic faction ofArknights.In a dystopian future, the inhabitants of the planet Terra display traits of animals, and a disease has spread across the world called ‘oripathy’ - and Rhodes Island is made up almost entirely of those infected.
This anime adaptation of the popular mobile game gives Amiya a chance to shine as an interesting character in her own right. She is shown to be a loyal, trusted, and qualified leader - perfect to lead the island in fighting for the future of the infected.
8Hitori Goutou
A surprise standout of the Fall 2022 Anime season,Bocchi The Rock!is a charming comedy music anime with a core cast of extremely lovable female characters. While it’s hard to choose just one, the shows protagonist Hitori “Bocchi” Gotou stands out as the comedic central of the show.

Bocchi is the guitar-playing lyricistof the band Kessoku, a group she joins due to her shy awkwardness and inability to say no to anything. Despite her gloomy, introverted nature, Bocchi is an extremely talented guitar player that dedicated six hours of every day for three years to honing her craft!
7Makima
Chainsaw Man’s Makima is a fantastic example ofa complex female character that isn’t necessarily good. Her motives are generally shrouded in mystery - yes, she needs to do her job, but the viewer is made aware that there’s no reason she needs to emotionally and sexually manipulate to do this.
Avoiding spoilers, Makima is a coercive and scheming character that is fascinating to watch on screen. She is interesting in a way that is typically only reserved for male characters, which is what makes her one of the best female characters of the Fall 2022 anime season.
6Lum
From the creator ofInuyasha,Urusei Yatsurais an acclaimed slapstick, rom-com, sci-fi series that has been rebooted for the Fall 2022 anime season! Lum is the female protagonist of the series, an alien oni that has made her home on Earth, and has made a (objecting) fiancée out of Ataru Moroboshi, a high school student with the unlucky habit of attracting otherworldly phenomena.
She’s a fantastic character to watch come to life on screen, thanks to her good nature and hot temper. She’s also the blueprintfor other great alien girlslikeTo-Love Ru’s Lala Deviluke - there’s really no overstating the impact she’s had!
5Tome Kurata
Tome, the leader of the Telepathy Club at Salt Middle School, takes on more of a dual protagonist role in Season 3 ofMob Psycho 100.As her graduation nears, she realizes that her time at the telepathy club may have been wasted: she’s not made any memories or managed to communicate with aliens as she wished.

She chooses to disband the club after this realization - a move that becomes the driving force of an entire mini-arc surrounding Tome and the telepathy club. Finally getting the chance to shine as a main character, Tome is allowed to develop her feelings of frustration and anger about the failure of her club.
4Anya Forger
Anya Forger is the adorable protagonist ofSpy x Family,an action-comedy about an unlikely familywith tons of secrets. Anya’s is that she’s a telepath! This means she knows all about her adoptive father’s secret spy career, and her adoptive mother’s assassin career. Far from finding this scary, she thinks it’s super awesome!
The series follows her father Loid Forger’s mission to befriend a high-ranking member of society and potentially end the fictional war between east and west. To do this, he needs a daughter to befriend his child (check!), a fake wife (who tops this list!), and a whole lot of patience.
3Mirko
Mirko’s presence in Season 6 ofMy Hero Academiais a stunning example of the greatness that happens when female characters are allowed to take the lead in shonen anime. Mirko participates in a major raid against the villains and leads the charge - fighting solo against high-level Nomus which literally costs her an arm and a leg.
This is the first time the series shows a female character fight this hard on her own. The battle scenes between the Nomus and Mirko are action-packed and thrilling to watch, and when the male characters show up, they’re also just as overwhelmed - many even more so.
2Power
Power is childish, greedy, violent, and self-motivated. She’s an open and habitual liar, and openly admits she’ll take the winning side in the war between devils and humans. On top of this, she’s lazy, unhygienic, and expects people to clean up after her. She’s also one of the most beloved characters of the Fall 2022 anime season!

Despite her almost comical amount of negative traits, Power still manages to be lovable and charming. This might be due to her cat, Meowy, a pet she cares for dearly which humanizes her to some extent. Or,perhaps people just like interesting and imperfect female characters, whichChainsaw Manhas in spades!
1Yor Forger
While the previous season ofSpy x Familyfocussed more on Loid, Anya, and the general family dynamic of the Forgers, this season shines a spotlight on the unlikely matriarch Yor. Unbeknownst to her undercover spy husband Loid, Yor is an assassin-for-hire, which is typically played for comedyby the imaginative Anya.
This season does a lot to develop her character, one that had already charmed so many viewers. She might be an incredible assassin, but she’s also a terrible cook, naturally forgetful, and a wonderful, caring mother figure to Anya.
