Earlier today, Canadian games journalist and host Geoff Keighley announced that Christopher Nolan would be one of the presenters atThe Game Awards on Thursday night, citing him as a “storyteller who transcends mediums.” Nolan will be presenting an award, but specifically which award he will give away has yet to be announced. Considering the astounding direction, narrative, and design, and scores found in his films, that leaves many possibilities open for Game Awards categories.
Noting Nolan to “transcend mediums” is both an accurate description considering what the film director has accomplished this year, such as partnering with Epic Games and Keighley to screen his films inFortnite, but also leads some to believe this hints towards future involvement in video games. While nothing has been teased in terms of surprising announcements at The Game Awards, it’s not a stretch for Nolan to get involved with gaming. In the past, Nolan has expressed major interest indeveloping anInception-based video game. In past interviews, Nolan also noted the influence that gaming puzzles and tutorials have had onInceptionandInterstellar.
That being said, The Game Awards has already brought on the help of other film industry stars to present awards, so it doesn’t necessarily mean anything major is in store. Alongside Christopher Nolan,Wonder Womanactress Gal Godot,Spider-Manstar Tom Holland, andCaptain Marvelactress andAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsenthusiast Brie Larsonhave all been confirmed as presenters at The Game Awards.
While this may not hint at any big plans for Nolan’s involvement in the games industry, this could be part of Keighley’s push to make video games a more established and respected art form by creating the Oscars of video games. When asked by a Twitter user why Game Awards is choosing to “hire celebrities” over promoting the industry itself, Keighley responded that they are “giving us their time and joining the show to salute these incredible creators.”
