Prior to the launch ofElden Ring, FromSoftware was facing a massive controversy. It was discovered that the multiplayer technology used forDark Soulsgames on PC included a significant vulnerability that put players' at risk. Bandai Namco then made a consequential decision to shut down all multiplayer servers forDark Souls,Dark Souls 2, andDark Souls 3.Dark Soulsfans have been waiting for news about the servers' return since and have now received an official update.FromSoftware has proffered a statement to PC Gamer regarding the status of theDark Soulsgames' multiplayer servers. The statement confirms that the company is currently working on “restoring” the multiplayer servers for allDark Soulsgames on PC. Unfortunately, it isn’t at a point where FromSoftware was willing to share information about a schedule, butDark Soulsplayers can at least rest easy knowing that the issue is actively being worked on.RELATED:Dark Souls Fan Makes Knight Artorias Out of ClayWhile no dates were shared regarding the return of theDark Soulsmultiplayer servers, FromSoftware did describe what will happen when the unannounced date arrives. It explains that it plans to restore multiplayer servers “progressively,” which likely means that it will reimplement multiplayer game by game. This will allowFromSoftwareto fully evaluate the improvements it made to server security before expanding to the next game. It will, however, mean that the server downtime is going to be extended indefinitely.

Lastly, FromSoftware explains that it will provide further information regarding its plans to bring back theDark Soulsmultiplayer servers “as soon as the restoration schedule is finalized.” Until then, the company asks fans ofDark Soulsto remain patient. FromSoftware fans are used to being patient, even if they’re not great at it. Luckily,Elden Ringis there to keep them distracted for a while yet.

This may not be the update that fans of theDark Soulstrilogy were hoping for. The initial statement when theDark Soulsgames had their servers taken down said that they’d be brought back up alongside theElden Ringlaunch. It’s now been some time since then and there’s no real explanation for the delay.

There may be some frustration fromDark Soulsand FromSoftware fans regarding the extended downtime for the multiplayer servers, but ultimately this is what’s necessary for the future of those games. The security issue left all threeDark Soulsgamesin an unacceptable state. As much time as needed to fix the issue, that’s what FromSoftware is taking. With that said, hopefully, news of the return of theseDark SoulsPC multiplayer servers will arrive soon.
