One animator shows off a recreation of the second trailer for theSuper Mario Bros. Moviemade in the art style of a Nintendo 64 game. Recently, Universal, Nintendo, and Illumination Pictures gave fans a sneak peek at the upcoming film, which highlighted a number of plot points and characters. Thesecond trailer for theSuper Mario Bros. Movieshowed off the first looks at the beloved Princess Peach as well as the iconic primate Donkey Kong.
With the movie teeming with easter eggs, references, and a general love for the source material, some have tried to re-imagine what it would look like in a particular art style from the games. One popular fan made animation style isrecreating theMario Moviein the graphics ofSuper Mario 64, due to not only nostalgia for the Nintendo 64, but also the revolutionary way it helped transition theMariofranchise into 3D. One fan animator, King Bob Gaming, did his own recreation of the film trailer using the same retraux style.

This recreation wears the Nintendo 64 style inspiration on its sleeve, using tilesets and textures thatoriginate fromSuper Mario 64to recreate the backgrounds. The models of Mario, Donkey Kong, Toad, Peach, and others are ripped from games of the era, including the aforementionedSuper Mario 64andSuper Smash Bros., though there are a number of custom models and animations that are somewhat beyond the console’s original capabilities.
Many fans praised theSuper Mario Bros. Movierecreation, not only for capturing the nostalgia of the 90s, but also for the detailed backgrounds and environments that pull from the library of games on the console. King Bob Gaming had previously made a short scene from the original trailer, where after it got 10K likes on his channel, he was encouraged to remake the whole trailer. They jokingly said in a comment that if the video got to 100K likes, they would reanimate the whole movie in this style.
The movie itself has been a hot topic of discussion ever since its reveal this year. The second trailer for the movie was followed up by anofficial sneak peek at The Game Awards 2022, which featured Mario platforming around his new surroundings in the Mushroom Kingdom. While some still take umbrage with Chris Pratt’s performance as Mario, many have openly praised Jack Black’s Bowser, Charlie Day’s Luigi, and Anya-Taylor Joy’s Princess Peach for what they seem to be bringing to the film.
The Super Mario Bros. Moviewill hit theaters on July 26, 2025.
