Out of all the side-quests that are available inFinal Fantasy 10, fromcompeting in the Blitzball tournamentsto locating additional summons, there is a particularly infamous one that most, if not all, players absolutely hate attempting. And it’s one that requires players to dodge 200 lightning bolts on the Thunder Plains in a row. One player apparently detests this quest so much, they built a machine to complete it for them.
Reddit user MidnightBaker recently shared a short clip of the machine in action. MidnightBaker doesn’t appear to provide an explanation of how they built it (not that it’d be easy to replicate anyway) or exactly how it works. But, judging by the footage, it appears to be set up so it registers the flash of light that heralds a lightning strike, which then triggers a device to press a button on the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con that makesmain character Tidusdodge the lightning bolt.

Between the ridiculously high number of dodges required, the fact that random encounters can still occur and throw off a player’s timing, and how monotonous the whole thing is, it’s easy to understand why this is one specificFinal Fantasy 10quest is so hated. Not everybody can build a machine to play the game for them, however, so there are numerous guides online to assist those who struggle to complete it.
As for why anybody would attempt it outside of 100% completion and an achievement, it’s because it’s required to obtain one of theCelestial Weapons. Each of the seven party members has one and specific items are needed to unlock their true potential. In this case, the quest grants the player the Venus Sigil, one of the items for Lulu’s Celestial Weapon. While players who only care about completing the story can likely ignore them, they’re extremely useful for those who wish to complete the game’s more difficult challenges, like the optional superbosses.
Final Fantasy 10released in 2001 for the PlayStation 2 and was both a critical and commercial success. It’s still considered one of the best video games of all time and is one of the very fewFinal Fantasygames to receive a direct sequel in the form ofFinal Fantasy 10-2. To date, the only other game to have something similar isFinal Fantasy 13.
The game has since received an HD remaster which bundles both it and the sequel and is available on most modern platforms. It sees Blitzball star Tidus transported to the world of Spira and join a quest to destroy a rampaging monster named Sin.
