Player Mistakes

Back to All Characters

InGenshin Impact’s 4.1 update, players are introduced to two new catalyst characters, one of whom is Wriothesley. He is the first Cryo catalyst user to be introduced to the roster. However, his playstyle sets him apart from other catalyst characters. Wriothesley prefers melee-range combat with boxing animations, making himsomewhat similar to Heizouin this regard. Consequently, his team composition requirements differ from those of typical catalyst characters. Wriothesley benefits from close-range support characters, particularly those who can provide crowd control and enable his melee-focused playstyle.

With this being the case,Wriothesley’sideal team members share some resemblance to those ofKamisato Ayaka, although Wriothesley can also effectively use Melt compositions, in contrast to Ayaka, who struggles with this elemental reaction due to her fast application. Wriothesley excels in Melt, Freeze, and Mono-Cryo team compositions. This versatility opens up various support options inGenshin Impact, including crowd control, elemental application, shield or healing, and more. In general, Wriothesley benefits most from Cryo support units like Shenhe, Anemo support units like Kazuha, Hydro units like Xingqiu, and Pyro support units like Bennett or Xiangling. However, if players don’t have access to all of these characters, there are alternative options that can still complement Wriothesley. With addition ofFurinaandCharlottein the upcoming patch, however, alternatives for him can expand even further. Below are some of hisbest team compositions, designed to minimize reliance on the same characters repeatedly.

Wriothesley + Shenhe + Xiangling + Bennett

Wriothesley excels in Melt team compositions, making him highly effective against boss enemies due to his single-target combat playstyle. Additionally, his optimal build with Marechaussee

Hunter doesn’t require him to rely on Blizzard Strayer or freezing for an added Crit Rate bonus. In this composition, players can benefit from both Cryo and Pyro resonance, leveraging their effects to boost Wriothesley’s performance as he also scales with ATK.

Cryo

Among the current Cryo units,Shenhe is the most ideal Cryo supportto pair with Wriothesley, as she can enhance Cryo damage. Xiangling and Bennett, on the other hand, are considered some of the best Pyro units generally, but also the best options for Wriothesley specifically. In this case, they have excellent synergy with each other and Wriothesley, as they can further boost his damage output, especially if Xiangling has access to later constellations.

For this team to operate most effectively, players should initiate the rotation with Bennett’s Burst, followed by Xiangling’s Burst, before switching to Shenhe and finally Wriothesley to maximize Wriothesley’s benefits. While Bennettcan serve as a Batteryin this composition, it’s essential to build Xiangling with sufficient energy recharge to activate her Elemental Burst every rotation.

Wriothesley + Sucrose + Nahida + Thoma

While Cryo doesn’t have its ownelemental reaction with Dendro, it can benefit from the Burning reaction between Dendro and Pyro to create Melt reactions. Although this approach is more restrictive compared to a standard Melt composition, it can be an enjoyable way to experiment with different team setups and unique strategies.

In this team composition, Thoma serves as the designated Pyro enabler, thoughXiangling, and evenBennett, orDehyacan also be used to some extent. It’s important to note that while Thoma’s application speed for Burning reactions is slower than Xiangling’s in general, he makes up for it by providing a shield for the on-field character.Nahida excels as an off-field DPS and support, easily maintaining the Burning reaction and buffing Elemental Mastery for the entire team. Sucrose, equipped with Viridescent Venerer, can debuff enemies and further enhance the team’s elemental mastery while providing crowd control.

Fontaine Emblem Final

Another advantage of Sucrose is that players have more control over which element to infuse for her Burst, ideally choosing Cryo to boost Wriothesley’s damage. This flexibility is particularly useful compared to Kazuha, who may struggle against enemies with self-infused elements. While adapting to the Burn-Melt playstyle can be challenging for some players, Wriothesley is an excellent character to experiment with this approach.

Wriothesley + Layla + Kazuha + Xingqiu

While Melt team compositions are generally excellent for Wriothesley, players who are not interested in this approach can build effective Freeze compositions with him. The Freeze composition offers more flexibility and ease-of-use compared to the burning-melt freeze option, as players have multiple Cryo, Hydro, and Anemo characters to choose from.

For players withoutShenhe, Layla is a great option, serving as both a Sub-DPS and shielder while providing Cryo resonance for the team. However, those who have Shenhe may find her to be a better fit regardless. Xingqiu excels as a Hydro applier with a low internal cooldown (ICD), offering some healing and resistance to interruption for Wriothesley, which helps assist in maintaining Marechaussee Hunter’s 4-piece effect. However, players seeking more Sub-DPS potential can considerYelanas a substitute forXingqiu.

Genshin Impact Wriothesley + Shenhe, Xiangling, Bennett

Kazuha is a strong choice as well, but players need to ensure that Cryo is swirled rather than Hydro by Xingqiu, unless they specifically require additional Hydro application. To achieve this, players can perform one normal attack with Wriothesley for Cryo application, then switch to Kazuha to begin the rotation with his Burst and Skill. Afterward, they can activate Shenhe’s and Xingqiu’s Bursts before returning to Wriothesley and stating his combo rotation until the Skill’s duration ends, and afterward repeating the rotation.

Wriothesley + Ganyu + Kokomi + Ayato

Players who enjoy using team compositions featuring sub-DPS options that can also serve as main DPS characters can consider an alternative Freeze composition. While Ayato and Ganyu are excellent main DPS characters, they can also function effectively as off-field Sub-DPS characters due to their long-duration Elemental Bursts, making them suitable for elemental application or serving as the primary DPS when necessary.

However, it’s worth noting that this composition may not offer the same party-wide buffs as other options with highly invested support characters, which can result in slightly lower overall damage output. To maximize the potential of this team composition, players should ensure they maintain the Elemental Bursts of Ganyu and Ayato in each rotation. Using Ganyu’s and Kokomi’s Elemental Skills between rotations is recommended, although Ayato may not need to use his Elemental Skill to maximize Wriothesley’s time on the field. Kokomi’s Elemental Burst should be reserved for situationsrequiring extensive healingsince perma-freeze teams excel in crowd control generally and won’t need healing often. This will also help reduce her on-field time, allowing Wriothesley to be on field as much as possible.

Genshin Impact Wriothesley + Sucrose, Nahida, Thoma

Wriothesley + Shenhe + Venti + Diona

Players can also consider a mono-Cryo team composition, although this option works best when players have Shenhe, as she can significantly boost Cryo damage. If players do not have Shenhe on the other hand, it might still be better for players to focus on elemental reaction oriented teams to maximize Wriothesley’s potential. In this team setup, two flexible slots are available, one for a Cryo character and another for an Anemo character, offering crowd control and buff capabilities.

Venti is a viable option for the Anemo slot, but players can also consider Sucrose or Kazuha, especially against bosses or lightweight enemies. Additionally, Diona can fill the fourth slot, providing healing, shielding, and a battery function alongside Venti to ensure both Shenhe and Wriothesley can use their Bursts in each rotation. Alternatively, Zhongli can be chosen to reduce the Elemental RES of enemies, as Geo and Anemo do not react to each other. Since Wriothesley can maintain his own HP, having a strong shielder without healing capability is still effective for keeping characters' HP high, even in challenging content.
