Super Smash Bros. Ultimatehas proven that few characters are off limits, meaning that it is anyone’s guess as to who could come to the game’s expansive roster next. Rumors forcharacters like Crash BandicootandOverwatch’s mascot Tracer have been spreading for a while, while fans have done their best to will cameos from the Doom Slayer and Master Chief into existence. However, one character that should get a surprise invitation is none other thanGod of War’s Kratos.
Seeing the Ghost of Sparta himself fighting inside ofSuper Smash Bros. Ultimatewould be incredible, as his debut could help kill the time until the nextGod of Wargame is released. Further, it would get more eyes on Smash, attracting yet another group of gamers to the popular fighting game. A move that would only benefit both PlayStation and Nintendo, while also adding an excellent fighter to the roster, it is hard to think of a more fitting addition than the Greek god.

Kratos’ Fighting Game Potential
Kratos is a natural fit for a fighting game, as his very nature has seen him taking down anything that gets in his way. Whether it was done to avenge his old family or protect his new one, Kratos has been seen beating down enemies andbrutally killing godsin every entry of his series. As such, thrusting him into the world ofSuper Smash Bros.simply makes sense, as Kratos would have no problem getting into a fight with whoever comes his way first.
Sony realized the fighting game potential of Kratos and some of its other characters back in 2012’sPlayStation All-Stars. While the game never took off, it was a decent attempt at copying theSmash Bros.formula, something that has made fanshope that a sequel will come. While this may or may not happen one day, Kratos’ moveset in that game could be similar to his fighting style inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. A Scorpion-like combat grapple with the Blades of Chaos, ranged shots with Apollo’s bow, and brief bursts of flight with Icarus’ wings were all possible in the game and could make a return.
However, Nintendo has an advantage with a potential inclusion of Kratos thatPlayStation All-Starsdid not have: the addition of the Norse moveset. 2018’sGod of Wargave Kratos a new weapon inthe Leviathan axe, with its Mjolnir-like recall ability allowing for a completely different style of gameplay. The game eventually allowed Kratos to wield the Blades as well, making for an even deeper moveset that Nintendo could pull from to create an excellentSuper Smash Bros.DLC. The best of both worlds, Smash’s version of Kratos could use both his Greek and Norse weaponry, making the PlayStation icon an absolute blast to play as.
Kratos’ Proven Crossover Potential
It is hard not to think of all the potential that could come from a Kratos appearance inSuper Smash Bros.Alternate skins could seeKratos rocking his classic attireorGod of War 2armor, while his son Atreus could appear as a special costume for one of the game’s Mii fighters. Stages could include anything from Olympus to a fight near the World Serpent toGod of War’s still-unseen version of Asgard, while an echo fighter could see someone like Baldur added alongside Kratos. Apart from all this potential for additional content, though, aGod of Warcrossover actually makes sense.
While Kratos’ appearance withinPlayStation All-Stars made sense given the character’s close association with the platform, his appearance in theworld ofMortal Kombatwas a fair bit more surprising. Sure enough, though, Kratos found himself being a fully playable fighter inMortal Kombat 9, wielding a much more violent version of his moveset than the one seen inPlayStation All-Stars. That said, Kratos fit the world ofMortal Kombatwell, and it was great to see him pulling off gruesome fatalities on fellow god Raiden.
WhileMortal Kombat 9came out in 2011, this was not Kratos’ last high-profile crossover. Late last year,Kratos appeared insideFortnite, boasting several special skins, back bling items, and his trusty axe. While the recency of thisGod of Warcrossover shows that Sony is willing to let Kratos appear in other games, the fact that Xbox character Master Chief can be seen insideFortniteas well only adds to the importance of this appearance. If PlayStation is willing to allow one of its most recognizable characters to appear alongside an Xbox character of the same importance, it seems likely that the company would also be on board with Kratos taking on Link, Samus, or Bayonetta.

Future PlayStation Cameo Potential
Besides Kratos being perfect for a fighting game and boasting the ability to serve as a huge draw for a new Fighters Pass, his appearance could further the working relationship between Sony and Nintendo.Joker from thePersonafranchisecracked open the door for more PlayStation crossover when he was added to the game, and Kratos coming toSuper Smash Bros. Ultimatecould kick that same door wide open. With two PlayStation exclusive characters in the game, the sky would be the limit for more exclusive characters to appear.
Death Stranding’s Sam could use BB’s detection skills, random packages, and weapons like the Bola Gun to his advantage.Aloy from theHorizonserieswould be another fine choice, as her bow would make for an excellent ranged playstyle. Deacon St. John fromDays Gonecould bring his motorcycle to the fight, while Cole McGrath or Delsin Rowe frominFAMOUScould make excellent use of their superpowers inside ofSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.Ghost of Tsushima’s Jin Sakai would bring a great moveset, too, while the belovedUnchartedprotagonist Nathan Drake could fumble his way to victory with a memorable fighting style.
With PlayStationmascots like Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, and Sly Cooper all on the table as well, there is no shortage of possible PlayStation character additions to choose from. Few are better than Kratos, however. While his arrival could serve as a way to start introducing more PlayStation characters, Kratos himself could quickly become a terrific member of theSmash Bros.roster if he is given the chance. While there is no hard evidence of such an addition, and this is purely wishful thinking, Nintendo should absolutely consider theGod of Warprotagonist going forward.
