Summary
Character creation is a massively popular feature in modern gaming, especially in the role-playing genre. Being able to create a character that feels personal to the player is becoming an increasingly valued component of games that feature role-playing elements, as it allows players to tailor a character that reflects their own personality, tastes, and imagination. To that end,the character creator found in Capcom’sDragon’s Dogma 2is immensely satisfying, providing players with a countless, nearly overwhelming amount of customization options and has arguably set a new standard for character creators to come. With that in mind,GreedFall 2’s character creator should look to games likeDragon’s Dogma 2for inspiration.
GreedFall 2: The Dying Worldis slated for a summer 2024 early access release, and Spiders has already been transparent about much of what the prequel-sequel will bring to the world ofGreedFall. One thing it has yet to reveal is the extent ofGreedFall 2’s character creator, which, if it is anything like the first game’s, could potentially be an underwhelming feature. However, withGreedFall, Spiders has proven its desire to give players an authentic role-playing experience, soGreedFall 2’s character creator could very well reflect that.GreedFall’s character creator was hardly anything to write home about, but it doesn’t have to spell bad news for the sequel.

GreedFall 2’s Character Creator Needs to Outshine Its Predecessor’s
GreedFall’s Character Creator Lacked a Surprising Amount of Depth and Detail
Despite the growing desire fordetailed character creators in modern RPGs,GreedFall’s fell short in a variety of ways. There were only eight presets available for a male or female, and only six or seven characteristics to modify for each one. Specifically, players could modify a male character’s face, hair, facial hair, eyebrows, skin color, hair color, and eye color, and all the same for a female character, except for facial hair.
Of those characteristics, there were only a handful of variations and none of them could be tweaked or refined. It definitely did its job, but it was underwhelming nonetheless.GreedFall 2: The Dying Worldcan’t afford to make the same mistake now.
GreedFall 2’s Character Creator Should Draw Inspiration From Games Like Dragon’s Dogma 2
There is no shortage of excellent character creators out there thatGreedFall 2could draw inspiration from — namely, games likeFallout 4,Cyberpunk 2077,Monster Hunter: World, and nowDragon’s Dogma 2. Capcom appears to be on the receiving end of most of the praise directed at character creators, soGreedFall 2should look no further than its biggest games for influence.
Dragon’s Dogma 2, for example, has what is quite possibly gaming’s most robust character creator to date, providing players with an incredible number of customization options. In fact,Dragon’s Dogma 2’s character creatoris so complex that Capcom felt obligated to include a more streamlined version of it for players who prefer to spend less time creating their character and more time playing the game.
GreedFall 2wouldn’t necessarily need to go to such lengths in its character creator, but it could at least benefit from looking to games likeDragon’s Dogma 2for inspiration.
GreedFallwas known for its BioWare-esque qualities— a notion that Spiders has doubled down on — and even BioWare has been known to include notable character creators in its games, such asDragon Age: Originsand theMass Effecttrilogy. Therefore,GreedFall 2could simply continue this trend of BioWare-inspired design and offer a more extensive character creator than its predecessor did.
