An interesting factor in the development of the game was thatHomeworld 3allowed fans to purchase shares in the game. A crowdfunding campaign was set up on Fig allowing fans to purchase shares, which would allow them to make suggestions in the games development and receive profits from future sales equatable to their investment. This scheme came to an end whenGearbox Software was bought by the Embracer Group. It raised over $1.5m and had over 8,000 backers, but the investments were never collected.
