Summary

Known for its seminalHitmangames, it’s now going to be exciting to see howIO Interactiveadapts those formulas and mechanics into a story-driven007game. There’s arguably no better developer to handle James Bond as a skilled secret agent whose techniques lean heavily into assassinations and espionage, though there is obviously a lot that IO will need to reevaluate to cater to the unique007experience, such as the potential for engaging close-quarters combat.

Of course, IO has a deep well to draw from for inspiration on its reinterpretation if it looks to any of the recent movies that helped to revitalize the franchise for modern audiences.IO’s007will apparently be an origin story for the titular protagonist and it’ll be interesting to see how that translates into his skillset and rank in M16 at the beginning of the game, but regardless IO will have the incredibly rare opportunity of debuting a brand-new Bond continuity while the franchise is in a theatrical hiatus.

IO’s 007 Can Enjoy Its Own Continuity Free of Comparison

There may be some inevitable comparisons to007movies and source material, but ultimately whateverIOdoes can feel relatively open-ended in how it chooses to portray the character since Bond is perpetually becoming more modern. HowCasino Royaledecided to depict a green 007 may be entirely different then compared to how IO might imagine its own 007 to start out, for example, and if the game is anything likeHitmanthen it’ll undoubtedly feel distinct as a result.

TheDaniel Craig Bond moviesare the most recent, but they’re also old enough now that they won’t beg such an equal comparison unless those stories are fresh in fans’ minds, while even older Bond movies are highly unlikely to have any resemblance in what IO strives for unless the game is taking a more time-period approach with outdated means of technology for Bond to consider in his equipment from Q Branch.

IO’s 007 Will Arrive in a Fortuitous Bond Draught

Unlike many other iconic franchise licenses, IO has managed to take on a Bond game at the most opportunistic time: immediately after Craig’s Bond movies and smack-dab in the middle of a lull where the next Bond saga is likely being considered. However, until the next Bond actor is cast and revealed, IO will have the IP all to itself to indulge in. Therefore, depending on how original and successful of a take it is, it could be a reimagining standard that fans hold future movies up to.

That’d be a tall order, but it helps that IO probably won’t have a new007movie releasing around the same time to worry about clashing with. Nothing of the game has been revealed yet, nor is its release window any more predictable, and while it may not have a lot of competition in games it will still have a lot to live up to if it wants to be a favorable contribution to theoverarching 007 loreas well as a unique mark on the character’s mythos.
