First, there’s Knoxville getting tossed into the air by a raging bull. TheJackasscrew have consistently gone up against angry charging bulls, most notably in the hilariously destructive opening credits of the second film,Jackass Number Two.We also see two members of the crew wearing a bizarre contraption on their heads that definitely promises something disgusting. Newcomer Sean “Poopies” McInerny (who recentlygot bitten by a sharkin a stunt gone wrong) faces down a snake while dressed as a mime, which doesn’t seem like it’s gonna end well for poor Poopie. Lastly, we can also see Knoxville being fired into the air out of a cannon over a body of water, another classic stunt.
Premiering twenty-one years ago on MTV,Jackassbegan as TV series which featured Knoxville and the gang pulling off wild anddangerous stunts rivaling blockbusters likeMission: Impossible, playing pranks on one another, and putting their lives in danger for our entertainment. The show quickly became popular among the MTV generation.
A true staple of the early 2000s,Jackassmanaged to tap into a certain destructive and lackadaisical mindset of the supposed “slacker” generation. This was before the days of YouTube, so viral videos weren’t really a thing yet. TheJackasscrew were truly pioneers of the prank and stunt entertainment that we can now see broadcast on social media. Even famous YouTubers such as The Try Guys owe their style and craft toJackass.
However, members such as Steve-O have actually criticized some of the ‘prank’ YouTubers of today, sighting their willingness to put others in danger and cause actual harm. While nothing was off-limits for the cast ofJackass, they always made themselves the butt of the joke, only ever capturing the hilarious reactions of everyday people but never wanting to hurt anyone outside of the crew.
Despite its enormous popularity, the show was not without its controversies, with some parents being fearful that their children would attempt to imitate the dangerous stunts featured on the show.Jackasswas canceled after three seasons but would live on in the subsequent feature films:Jackass: The Movie, Jackass Number Two,andJackass 3D.
It’s been over ten years since the lastJackassmovie and it’s not hard to think that after the last two years audiences will be craving this kind of escapist and cathartic entertainment. Of course, not every member of the original crew will be featured inJackass 4. One of the original members of the team, Ryan Dunn, was tragically and suddenly killed in a car accident in 2011. As well, Bam Margera, who went on to create his own reality showViva La Bamoff the success ofJackass, was fired from the film due to his struggles with substance abuse.
According to Knoxville,Jackass 4will be the final film in the franchise, but considering the fact that many of the original cast members are now middle-aged, they arguably deserve a break. Here’s hopingJackass Foreverwill give these daring, crazy MTV-era entertainers the appropriate send-off they deserve.
