Summary
Twitchpersonality Kai Cenat live streamed for the first time since the mayhem that occurred in New York City on August 4. The streamer had announced that he would be giving fans PlayStation 5 consoles and gift cards in Union Square, butKai Cenat’s giveaway event resulted in a massive riotand vandalism instead of a good time.
While still inside his SUV at the location, the2023 Streamer of the Yearhad expressed his excitement about the giveaway, but he would immediately be swarmed upon exiting his vehicle and the situation only worsened from there. The crowd of thousands, many of which were juveniles, are accused of lighting firecrackers, trashing businesses, fighting, and vandalizing and breaking into cars. Police armed with pepper spray, batons, and riot gear soon showed up, and at least 65 attendees were arrested, including the content creator himself.

In a short stream on August 9, Kai Cenat addressed the riot that occurred in New York City, stating that he is “beyond disappointed in anybody who became destructive that day” and doesn’t condone any of the bad behavior. TheTwitchcontent creator reiterated that his intentions were good and also said that he now realizes the power and influence he has. When he and his team hold events, Cenat concluded, it “not only needs to be safe, but it needs to be fun.”
Cenat’s team also issued an apology immediately in the aftermath of the riot, which shared a similar sentiment. “We are deeply disheartened by the outbreak of disorderly conduct that affected innocent people and businesses, and do not condone that behavior,” the official statement said. There have been legal repercussions as a result of the bedlam in Union Square, and Cenat revealed that he is facing multiple charges.
Part of the problem stems from the fact that the Twitch streamer did not have a permit, and there were no security measures in place in anticipation of the large crowd that would gather.Kai Cenat also revealed that he’s going to step back from streamingfor a bit because he now has court dates to attend, with the first occurring on August 16. The irony of the situation is that the creator’s fans, in their eagerness to see him and win a new console, have now gotten him in trouble with the law, reduced the amount of time that he will be available to stream, and made it likely that the streamer won’t attempt another event like this in the near future.
