As perLokiseason 2 director Aaron MoorheadinMarvel Studios Assembled: The Making of LokiSeason 2 (viaGames Radar), the initial ending didn’t see Loki destroying the Temporal Loom and taking over; instead, he saved it. After rescuing the Temporal Loom, Loki would have claimed “the throne.” However, the director recognized that this wouldn’t have infused the series with as much emotional depth.

There was a draft of the script of the very end, the very end. Something wasn’t sitting right with both of us about it. And the issue was, that this draft didn’t have Loki destroying the Loom. He saved the Loom from imploding and then ascended the throne. We all knew something was up, we just didn’t know what. ‘Cause it was like, well he’s trying to save the Loom, he gets the throne, all of this.

Additionally, the director didn’t shy away from admitting that they thankfully didn’t go ahead with that particular ending and made the right choice. “But the problem was, is that he didn’t have the sacrifice, and we realized, why doesn’t he destroy the Loom and then have to take over the Loom’s massive responsibility? He doesn’t get anything out of it,” the director said. “It seems so obvious now, it seems like exactly the right choice. But that was a watershed moment in the development of it, when we realized Loki needs to destroy and become the Loom.”

Moorhead and the team of writers made an excellent decision by ending the series with a massive sacrifice from Hiddleston’s character. This version of Lokinaturally transformed from a selfish person to doing everything possible to save his friends. Fans couldn’t have expected a more impactful conclusion than seeing their favorite comic book character sacrificing everything to take over the Temporal Loom. It allowed Loki to control all the timelines while allowing his loved ones to live the life they wanted.

Lokididn’t gain anything personally from what he did in theLokiseason 2 ending. That’s why the finale resonated so much with the viewers. Throughout two seasons, Hiddleston’s character turned out to be someone who became thoughtful and cared about the people who helped him. So, it doesn’t come as a shock that Marvel Studios decided to go with an ending that would have positively impacted everyone’s minds. It would be interesting to see how theLokiseason 2 ending changes the character’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Lokiseasons 1-2 are currently available for streaming on Disney Plus.
