Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ occult narrative is fun to progress through as players unlock more iconic Marvel characters, but its protagonist avatar is no slouch when it comes to having a lot of importance in key story beats.Marvel’s Midnight Sunscould have easily sidelined the playable protagonist as the player-vessel with no inherent ties to anything in the game’s events, and instead it chose to make the fully customizable Hunter character essential. The Hunter is Lilith’s child after all, and the protagonist and antagonist share a lot of moments together up until the end.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ endgameis a little awkward, though, in how it abruptly sends players back before the conclusion once they have rolled credits. This is typical of a lot of games that let fans continue playing in the same save file, but the issue withMarvel’s Midnight Suns’ approach is that the Hunter and Lilith become trapped within the Darkhold. Therefore, playing as the Hunter again shortly after seeing that is incongruous with the story. If the Hunter is meant to be the protagonist in a sequel, it will be difficult to reason with players as to how that is possible.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Protagonist is Currently Locked Away

The Hunter is still around and locked inside the Darkhold with Lilith inMarvel’s Midnight Suns. But if that particular character is reprised as the sequel’s protagonist, that could insinuate that players will not have an opportunity to customize them. It would not make much sense to be able to customize an established character that players have already created, and if it is meant to be the same child of Lilith that the player and the playable characters got to know intimately, it would be alarming if they were to suddenly look different. The only option here in retaining the identical Hunter players created is if Firaxis allowed save files to carry over to the sequel, which would in turn allow the player’s customized avatar to be imported.

This would go above and beyond expectations, but it would also be incredible if the player’s friendship levels could be imported as well, if several characters fromMarvel’s Midnight Sunswere to also be reprised alongside the Hunter. It seems like a potential sequel would open with theHunter and Lilith being released from the Darkhold, but it is also possible that they remain sealed away, leaving an opportunity for a new playable protagonist to be featured instead.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Sequel Could Use a New Protagonist

Introducing a new protagonist would give players another blank canvas of a character to customize to their liking, as was a huge part ofMarvel’s Midnight Suns. The protagonist could be woven into the narrative as strongly as the Hunter, or simply be a character tagging along for the ride in order to let other Marvel characters have a larger presence.

It is unclear if a sequel would take place atMarvel’s Midnight Suns’ Abbeyagain or somewhere else, though it would make more sense for a new customizable character to come from elsewhere. Otherwise, while the Hunter is trapped in the Darkhold, it would also be exciting for players to roleplay as an iconic Marvel character instead. They may not be fully customizable, but such a character could serve as the player’s avatar and be given appropriately characteristic dialogue options when interacting with others.

The reason why this might not be Firaxis’ most popular option is because it could alienate fans who would have preferred to play as a customizable character, let alone a different Marvel hero on the sequel’s team. Either way, ifaMarvel’s Midnight Sunssequelis ever announced, it will be interesting to see how Firaxis decides to solve this protagonist issue.

Marvel’s Midnight Sunsis out now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, with PS4, Switch, and Xbox One versions coming later.
