At this point, it would be difficult to find someone who hasn’t yet played the global sensation that isMinecraftor at least is familiar with it in some context. As avideo game with near infinite replay value, its popularity has surpassed what most people would have expected when it first came out more than ten years ago. Within its confines, millions of fans have spent the last decade or so constructing any number of buildings, contraptions, and artwork, and sometimes the game is even used to celebrate real -world events.
This week, the Queen of England is due to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee, which commemorates her 70th year of service to the British people. To mark this occasion, a street party has been designed withinMinecraft, which has actually been commissioned by GPU titans Nvidia. As well as bunting and other decorations adorning the streets, the virtual celebration comes with a recreation of Buckingham Palace. The entire download, according to the description, covers an area of roughly 830,000 square feet. The project took 650 hours to build, and comprises around 45 million blocks.

It’s not often that Britishness is the subject of a detailed project in Mojang’s sandbox game, but when it does appear, it is often spectacular in design. In fact, not long ago, it was announced that a bunch ofMinecraftplayers are creating a 1:1 scale of the entire United Kingdom. At the time of this article going live, there is still a long way to go, with MapHub currently showing that a few towns and other areas have been completed, but it seems progress is coming along.
This is also not the first time that team green has done something withMinecraft, either. At the end of last year,Nvidia helped raise money for Great Ormand Street Hospitalvia the medium of aMinecraftwinter showcase. Given the time of year that the map was released, it naturally had a Christmas vibe about it, and while it was a way to showcase off some incredible building talent, it also demonstrated the charitable side of gaming.
As forMinecraftitself, it’s currentlyone of the most played video games of 2022so far, despite how long it’s been out. That alone should be an indication of just how huge it is, and it’s nice to know that anyone wishing to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, whether they’re British or not, can do so within the blocky, low-res world.
