PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, one of the original battle royale games, has not maintained its prominence as much as competitors likeFortnite. However, afterdropping its partnership with Tencent in India,PUBGhas continued to push forward.
Many creditPUBGwith being the game that brought the battle royale genre onto the scene in a big way. While it faces more stiff competition these days, with the likes ofFortniteand subsequent titles such asApex Legendsinnovated onPUBG’s formula, the PUBG Corporation is still playing.PUBGis currently in its eighth season, but not for much longer.

Season 9 is releasing October 21 on PC and October 29 on console, and the game is looking to bring in new content to keep its fanbase. That fanbase has already dwindled over time as players leave for newer shooters and battle royales with more features. As such,PUBGis trying to innovate in its own unique ways compared to those other companies. This will hopefully well manifest in anew map teased for Season 9named Paramo.
The Paramo map has only been shown in small clips so far. It looks like it takes place in a jungle setting, with the most prominent feature in the distance being a giant, active volcano. By “dynamic,” PUBG Corp apparently means the map changes. Each time players drop in, buildings and important landmarks will have likely changed. This is a good idea for the game, since change is part ofwhat makes a good battle royalefun over time. If Paramo shifts substantially, it could make for a map that is almost perpetually fresh.
Another part of the map that sounds interesting is the lava flow. It’s clear there are at least two general settings for the map to go along with the randomized sites: fresh and burnt. How exactly the lava flow will work is unclear, but it may be a variant of the shrinking play zone. PUBG Corp says it’s a small map, so lava pinning people in could force faster confrontations. WhenPUBG Corp previously said it had interesting plans for Season 9, this may not have been the first thing players imagined, but it is a solid idea on paper.
Finally, there will be helicopters above the map carrying supply drops. Players can either chase them and wait for the drop, or shoot down the choppers themselves. Time will tell whether this big update brings in more players for PUBG Corp. Considering PUBG’sconcurrent playerbase was recently surpassed byAmong Us, the game could use an extra boost.
