Skyrimfans online have been debating their opinions on the most disappointing faction featured in the game. The 2011 release ofSkyrimsaw plenty of factionsthat players could join and make their mark upon, and it’s a key element for players to build their role-play in-game.

The factions inSkyrimmake up a large bulk of the game’s content, with the main quest taking up much of the rest of the players' time. However, they’re not all well-received, and face a universal criticism that has often been leveled at Bethesda games. Many players believe that the protagonist becomes the leader ofSkyrim’s factions far too early into the quest lines, and claim it doesn’t feel earned. It’s easy to see both sides of the argument. For many, RPGs are about the fulfillment of a power fantasy, and being able to become the leader of a guild quickly is a great way to achieve that effect. Meanwhile, others play RPGs for a strong feeling of progression over the course of the game, and this would achieve the opposite effect.

The post was made by Redditor CressDirect5902, who claims that the Bards College is the most disappointing faction featured inSkyrim. Tucked away near the back of Solitude, there will be plenty of players who don’t even know theBards College exists inSkyrim. According to the player, they were disappointed that rather than a refreshing change of pace, the Bards College adhered to much ofSkyrim’s quest design by having the player dive through more draugr-infested dungeons.

Many players in the thread agreed that the Bards College was the most underwhelming faction inSkyrim, with some even claiming it isn’t actually a faction at all. They also offered solutions in the form of mods. There aremanySkyrimmodsout there that add huge amounts of content to the game, and the Bards College is no exception. One mod mentioned was the “Become a Bard” mod, which allows players to perform and get money, but unfortunately doesn’t change the quests themselves. However, it’s definitely a small role-play option that’ll be perfect for many players out there.

Players are understandably excited to discoverwhat factionsThe Elder Scrolls 6has in store for players. Questlines such as the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves Guild can almost certainly be confirmed, as they’ve become iconic across multiple iterations ofThe Elder Scrolls, and encourage a different style of play than the typical hack-and-slash that many undertake by default. It will be interesting to see if Bethesda goes back to a traditional Fighters Guild and Mages Guild as seen inOblivion, or follows on fromSkyrim’s approach with replacements Companions and the College of Winterhold taking their place.

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimis available now on PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
