Summary

A crossover betweenDiablo 4andCall of Dutyisn’t exactly a natural fit, both from an artistic perspective and a gameplay one, and as a result, some players from theDiablocommunity couldn’t help but voice their displeasure over the shared content. WhileDiablo 4was a major success for Blizzard at launch, its honeymoon stage wore off fast, and fans began to passionately demand the quality-of-life changes thatDiablo 4was missing. The release of the controversial Patch 1.1 and the accompanying Season of the Malignant saw a lot of players leave the game, asDiablo 4’s viewership on Twitch plummetedby over 98% since release.

October 17 will see the release ofDiablo 4’s Season of Blood, which will bring a couple of fixes to its itemization such as reworked resistances and slot-free gems, but many fans unfortunately see it as more of the same from Season of the Malignant. In their eyes, it may take more than adding a stash filter to make the experience worth it, asDiablo 4’s endgame still lacks the satisfying gameplay loop of Greater Rifts fromReaper of Souls.

In a move that also brought Skeletor and Spawn toModern Warfare 2, Activision has added Inarius and Lilith to theCall of Dutyfranchise as playable skins. Dissatisfied with the direction ofDiablo 4, players such as razbouz have expressed their disapproval of the crossover on Reddit, with some fans bitterly joking thatCall of Dutywas getting moreDiablocontentthanDiablo 4, or that even the Mother and Father of Sanctuary quit the game to play something else.

OtherDiablo 4players have found the crossover to be hilarious in concept, choosing to view the whole situation under a more positive light. While it’s fair to say thatDiablo 4may have been a disappointment to a fair amount of its fans, this isn’t the first time aDiablogame was in dire straits. It took an expansion pack that completely reworked itemization and its endgame forDiablo 3to shine after its disastrous launch, and it could be argued that the climb forDiablo 4won’t be as steep by comparison.

BlizzCon 2023 is fast approaching, and given the format ofDiablo 4as a live service title, it’s quite possible that the first expansion pack will be announced during the opening presentation. Since it’s become obvious that players are demanding more radical changes to be made inDiablo 4, changes that can’t be covered through seasonal content or balance patches, Blizzard is perfectly poised to once again redeem aDiablotitle by releasing an expansion that can polish out its rough edges. While it remains to be seen if lightning will strike twice,Diablo 4players should mark November 3on their calendars nonetheless.

Diablo 4is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
