Summary

The Play of the Game feature is one which hasn’t undergone any notable changes since the release ofOverwatch 2, though some players believe a new version is coming or may already be in the game following the most recent update. Since therelease of the firstOverwatch, the game’s hardcore playerbase commonly shares their own Play of the Game on social media to highlight their skill. The new change, though, may mean players will have to get familiar with sharing the spotlight at the conclusion of a match.

Despite all the changes that arrived as part ofOverwatch 2’s release in October 2022, the Play of the Game feature remained the same as the original game. A match inOverwatch 2can be fairly chaotic, given the number of players and abilities available at any given time, and the feature would pick out what it considered to be the “best” play by an individual player. The spotlighted play could vary as much as team composition, as well, from a Mercy pulling off a clutch resurrection to a Junkrat managing to wipe out most of the opposing team with a perfectly-timed riptire.

The start of August 2023 saw the kickoff of Season 6, bringing with it thenew hero Illariand three new PvE story missions pitting players against Null Sector. However, some players began to notice a change to the Play of the Game feature where some highlights would showcase two players instead of just one. Posts have been appearing on social media showing these shared Play of the Game moments, leading some players to speculate if this was an intentional change or a bug from the seasonal update.

While Blizzard hasn’t confirmed if it is a change or bug as of this writing, it didn’t stop some players from speculating on possible reasons for it being a legitimate change, the most popular being to encourage better teamwork. Their argument is that the focus on team-play can sometimes be forgotten while in theOverwatch 2Quick Play playlistas matches can often feature several solo players in it, as opposed to the competitive playlists. By having the Play of the Game feature multiple players, it may encourage solo players try and be more aware of where their teammates are and trying to coordinate better to beat the opposing team.

The other argument players have put forth if it is a bug, Blizzard should consider making it an actual change in an upcoming season. If Blizzard wanted to put a renewed emphasis on team-play, it is possible a “shared"Play of the Game inOverwatch 2could help accomplish this by showcasing key moments of teamwork within a match instead of just one player’s best moment. All players can do for now, though, is wait and see if this is the route Blizzard ends up going with the feature.
