A recent trailer forStar Wars: Jedi Survivorshowed off some platforming sequences, which revealed that Cal Kestis will have a grapple hook in the sequel.Star Wars Jedi: Survivoris shaping up to have a lot of new features that build upon the first game, even beyond its platforming and combat. While a grapple hook is sure to be a fun addition, the game shouldn’t neglect to teach Cal Kestis how to use one of the Jedi’s most well-known Force tricks.
Adding agrappling hook into a video gamehas rarely been a bad idea, which certainly bodes well for platforming in the nextStar Warstitle. Platforming and learning new means of traversal was a big component to exploring environments in the first game, so it makes a lot of sense that platforming will continue to be a part of the experience going forward. With this in mind, the sequel is a perfect place to introduce Cal to Force jumping, since it wasn’t a feature in the original game.

Star Wars' Jedi Force Tricks
ThelatestStar Wars Jedi: Survivortrailershowed off more about the story than any other reveal, while demonstrating a little bit more of the platforming and combat gameplay. One possibility concerning Cal’s ability to Force jump in the upcoming game is that it might be possible, but that it hasn’t been shown off yet. Another potential for Force jumping is that Cal will be able to perform it in very specific scenarios.
Force jumping isn’t exclusive to Jedi from the franchise’s movies, though films play a large role in establishing the franchise’s canon. A lot ofStar Warsgames have used Force jumping to some extent alongside otherJedi Force tricks. Even theLego Star Warsgames have included versions of the ability.
Characters in the first game were able to Force jump, so Cal could easily learn from his opponents. Trailers for the game have already shown that some of Cal’s Jedi Force tricks have improved since the first game, but after the infamous Order 66 purged the galaxy of most Jedi - with the inquisition hunting down a majority of the remaining Force users, Cal may not have a mentor to learn new Jedi tricks from. Fans know thatCal’s original crew will be returning in some capacity, but it’s still unclear if Cere Jundais able to wield the Force now. Even though she couldn’t in the originalStar Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, that didn’t interfere with her taking on a mentorship role.
Ultimately, Cal not being able to perform the Force jump would be a missed opportunity. It makes sense why a grapple hook would be added instead of the ability to Force jump in terms of balancing, yet this would still be a let down forStar Warsfans who want to really harness all the abilities of a Jedi. The grapple hook looks like it will only be useful in scripted moments or exact locations, unlike natural Force jumping that would be harder to artificially constrain. The grapple hook may be Respawn’s attempt to keep players reigned in on the intended path, and prevent them from exploring out of bounds aroundStar Wars Jedi: Survivor’s more open environments. Of course, this is all based on assumptions given the developer hasn’t explicitly mentioned its motives behind the grapple hook, so fans will just have to wait and see what the final product holds.
