Deadline broke the news about Ayer signing on to directThe Beekeeper, nothing that Miramax will shop the project at the upcoming Cannes market. The hope is thatThe Beekeeperwill launch a franchise for the studio. The film’s basic premise sounds slightly in the realm of being a lighthearted film. Think of howHobbs and Shawhad moments of humordespite primarily being an action-adventure film. The upcoming film will also no doubt have other notable or high-profile names to join Statham and Ayer. Maybe it’ll also be a chance to get some new talent in the door for Statham to pass the torch, so to speak.
Having Ayer and Statham work together is no doubt great for both parties. It helps Statham build his network and it also helps Ayer get some sort of redemption after what happened to him during his time at DC. For those who don’t know, Ayer was the director of thehighly polarizingSuicide Squadfilm, which was the victim of interference from the higher-ups, re-shoots, and creative differences.
Many thought it was Ayer’s fault, but after Zack Snyder’s second chance at DC Comics films, many fans became aware of how studio interference works. This is why many have been calling for Warner Bros. to release theAyer Cut ofSuicide Squad. They want to see the film that the director had intended to make and not the failed film that was actually released in theaters.
The Beekeepermay be a shot at proving what Ayer can do, and if its popularity grows enough, maybe there’ll be a shot at the original or trueSuicide Squadbeing released asDC continues to work on its kinksand handle its weaker links. Hopefully, for fans' sake, there’s less of this drama moving forward.
