Summary

Baldur’s Gate 3is the ultimate way for players to create theDungeons & Dragonsadventure of their dreams, using the game’s robust character creation tools to craft their perfect protagonist. However, forBaldur’s Gate 3players who may feel intimidated by the character-creation process, there are several original characters that players can select from to play during their adventure through Faerun. While the selection of these Origin Characters in the base game is solid, future DLC should give players the option to play as even more Origin Characters to expand their backstories further.

While DLC forBaldur’s Gate 3hasn’t been confirmed, developerLarian Studioshas stated that they’re open to the idea of DLC for the game and have been discussing the topic. The DLC forBaldur’s Gate 3could go in plenty of directions, such as bringing players to a new location like Neverwinter or Waterdeep, or even adding more classes for players to choose from when creating their character. However, one possible DLC addition could be the inclusion of more Origin Characters to add variety to new playthroughs.

Why Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC Should Add More Origin Characters

Origin Characters inBaldur’s Gate 3are pre-made characters that players can select from when choosing their character’s background during the game’s character creation, whose physical appearance and starting class can’t be changed during this process aside from the Dark Urge. A character’s origin encompasses their history and how they fit into the greater world ofBaldur’s Gate 3, which can dictate how others perceive a character and what types of interactions and dialogue choices are available to them. The Origin Characters who are not selected as playable characters appear as companions for the player inBaldur’s Gate 3, except for the Dark Urge.

Current Baldur’s Gate 3 Origin Characters

Aside fromthe Dark Urge, these Origin Characters will likely already be familiar toBaldur’s Gate 3players, as their stories can still be viewed from the perspective of a companion if the player recruits them to their party. What makes their stories different as Origin Characters comes from the player’s ability to directly influence their choices throughout the game, rather than relying on the level of their bond with them as a companion for influence. The Dark Urge is unique in that they can’t be found as a companion, and choosing this origin for a custom character unlocks some very dark storylines for the player.

Companions that Should Become Origin Characters in Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC

Three other potential companions can be recruited inBaldur’s Gate 3, but are not available as options for Origin Characters. Each of these characters has more complex requirements than other companions for players to recruit them, and tend to come later in the game. However, being an Origin Character could make someone likeMintharamore interesting as playing her from the start could give players a glimpse at how she became entangled with the Absolutists' plot to destroy the Emerald Grove, or Halsin, who could have a completely different prologue that sees him infiltrating the Goblin Camp from the start.

Jaheira and Minscwould be more complicated Origin Characters for aBaldur’s Gate 3DLC to include since they can’t be recruited until much later in the game, but they could potentially allow players to see a completely different side of the game’s events. An Origin Jaheira could allow players to see her journey to reach the Shadow-Cursed Lands and the Last Light Inn in pursuit of Ketheric Thorm. An Origin Minsc would be more complicated but could be accompanied by Jaheira and tell the tale of how he becomes infected with an Illithid tadpole, becoming brainwashed by a false Jaheira.
