ThePlayStation 5has been officially revealed, and multiple subsequent details have been announced regarding the next iteration of PlayStation. So far, thePlayStation 5boasts some rather impressive innovations in terms of its hardware. However, there are some details regarding the console that have not been met favorably by members of the gaming community.
Ever since Sony first announced its development, the PlayStation 5 is a system has been surrounded in mystery. Nearly a full year after its initial announcement,the design specifications of the PS5were revealed to the gaming community less than a week ago. Still on track to release during the holiday season of 2020, this console is looking much more promising as time goes on.

However, one design feature that is found lacking in terms of the PS5’s hardware is the inclusion of backward compatibility. It was confirmed that thePS5 will be backward compatiblewith the vast majority of PlayStation 4 games, which is certainly good news. However, the system will not be backward compatible with the PlayStation 3, 2, or 1– Much to the chagrin of multiple people in the gaming community.
In a recent interview, Ozan Drøsdal, the lead developer at the indie studio Perfectly Paranormal, stated that, while it is disappointing that thePS5 won’t be backward compatible with older generations of systems, he ultimately felt that it won’t affect the sales or popularity of the PS5. While it is unfortunate that the backward compatibility won’t reach as far back as the PlayStation 1, that likely won’t hinder the success of the PS5.
As technology has grown and evolved with each console generation, it has become increasingly more difficult to support backward compatibility. However, to balance this, Sony and other developers have adopted ways of allowing players to experience older games on a newer system. This largely comes in the form of ports of older games, remakes, and Sony’s streaming servicePS Now, which is said to work differently on the PS5.
Despite the lack of extensive backward compatibility, the PS5 has so much potential. The design specs are impressive, not to mentionthe weird and innovative design featuressurrounding the PS5 controller. While there is still much to learn and unpack regarding this console, the PS5 is already on track to be an incredibly successful and high selling system.
