Controlis a game that often goes overlooked or underappreciated by some players. For how amazing the game looks in its base form, the studio behind theControlhas given its fans a look at how the game would play on a classic system.
Remedy Entertainment, the studio that developedControl, has been around for quite awhile now. The studio was first known for its work on theMax Payneseries, alongside Rockstar Games. Though, it wouldn’t be until the release of the studio’s landmark titleAlan Wakethat would garner the studio mainstream attention. However, likely as part of an April Fools Day prank, Remedy has put out a gameplay video showcasing whatControlwould look like with PS1 graphics. It’s quite shocking to see how similar the PS1 version looks compared to the original, with bodies possessed byThe Hissfloating in mid-air, along with how the aesthetic of the Oldest House still manages to remain recognizable in spite of the stylistic change.
This actually became a fairly recent trend for users or game developers to recreate certain popular games and make them to look as though they had launched on an older platform. Many users have taken to usingDreams, the PS4 exclusive title by Media Molecule, to recreate entire games from the ground up or revamp them in different graphical styles. A trend it seems Remedy Entertainment has taken to as well in terms ofControl.
It’s possible that users will take inspiration from this video and develop PC mods that restyleControlinto a PS1 game. Considering how creepy the atmosphere ofControlalready is, the PS1 graphics could transform the game into more of aSilent Hill-type experience, with potentially new changes in sound design. With any luck, this video could give members of the modding community some ideas.
In any case, it will be interesting to see what Remedy Entertainment does in the future. There are already rumors circulating thatAlan Wake 2is in development, which if that turns out to be true, could be huge for longtime fans of the series.
