Summary

Ubisoft’sFar Cryfranchise is one of the most popular and long-running open-world FPS IPs. The first title was released in 2004, but it was 2012’sFar Cry 3that arguably put iton the map alongside Ubisoft’s other flagship series,Assassin’s Creed. Following that,Far Cryhas been a staple in the developer’s catalog, consistently releasing numbered titles as well as spin-offs and various DLCs, with the latest mainline beingFC 6in 2021.

Since then, though,Far Cryhas gone through a period of radio silence. Though there has not been any official word from the studio on its plans, that hasn’t stoppedFar Cry 7leaks and rumorscirculating throughout the course of 2023, as speculation mounted the more the deafening silence resounded. As such, there is still at this time little currently known regarding what its status in 2024 could be, and it should be kept in mind that much of the information below is based on what minimal substantial news aboutFC 7is available.

Far Cry 7 Rumors

So far, it’s confirmed thatFC 5narrative designer and lead writer Drew Holmes is helming the IP as director. Aside from that, rumored possibilities surroundingFar Cry 7include:

Based on the cult and island items in particular, it could be the case thatFar Cry 7will combine elements fromFC 3and5, while mixing up the existing formula with the non-linear and timer elements. This is pure conjecture, however, and aside from Holmes being appointed director, none of the rest is official in any way, though it does spark some interesting angles for the future ofFar Cry.

Far Cry Pattern May Narrow Down FC7 Release Date

TheFar Cryseries has had a fairly consistent release schedule since 2012:

2012

2014

2016

2018

Far Cry 6

2021

There was a steady two-year window betweenFC 3and5, which jumped to three years separating5and6. Some reports allege that fans won’t see anotherFar Cryuntil Spring 2025, and if true, would mark the longest gap to date. Assuming the next won’t be at least until 2024, though, the wait is already on par with the previous interval. One other item of note was the announcement in November thatFar Cry 6will not be getting any more updates. This may point to production onFar Cry 7ramping up soon, although that is also speculation.

Two spin-offs,Blood DragonandNew Dawn, were also released in 2013 and 2019 respectively, while a trilogy of villain-based DLCs came out between Fall 2021 and Spring 2022.

Ubisoft is well-known for having multiple irons in the fire, with concurrent projects in the works across various studios and partners. Among them, it is confirmed to be co-developing and publishingStar Wars Outlaws, which currently has a planned 2024 release. Given the IP and its high expectations, it’s possible a lot of attention is being given toOutlawsat the moment instead ofFar Cry.Nevertheless, Ubisoft has not officially confirmed or commented on a lot of the above, making it difficult to pinpoint what might be expected fromFar Cryin 2024.
